'A central focus of her life since she was a child'

Family reflection of Toni McGregor  by her son Adrian

The best way to find yourself is to love yourself in the service of others.  Matahama Gandhi.  I think this sums up the lived outlook of my mother perfectly.  She was devoted to helping her family, friends and those around her.

On behalf of the McGregor family, I would like to begin by thanking everyone that is here today and to those who have sent condolences.  We appreciate that it is a challenging time for everyone given the current Covid situation, so we truly appreciate your presence here this morning and all your warm wishes during this difficult time.

Some of you may know me, but if not, my name is Adrian.  I am Toni's eldest son.  I am joined today by my brother Russell, my partner Susie and our children Zane, Max and Jamila.  Unfortunately my other son Zvi based in Canada could not attend.

My mother would have been so honoured and humbled by all the love of family and friends in the church this morning. There was nothing more important to my mum.  This church and its community has always been a central focus of her life since she was a child.

Toni, was born here in Newcastle in 1937.  Aside from a period in Europe, Newcastle was always her home.  Mum was an only child; her father, a Newcastle solicitor and her mother, a country girl from Blayney.

Mum always had a passion for travel, new experiences, different countries, culture and people.  Before her marriage to my father, she spent time in Europe on her own, boarding a ship and adventuring across Europe on her Italian Vespa motor scooter. She worked in London and loved the ballet, theatre and arts.

Back in Australia, mum went to oversee the building of her own house in Merewether in 1967 and worked various jobs in administration and bookkeeping until she retired in her 60's.  At retirement, mum was lucky enough to shift her focus to the things in life that brought her true joy.  She loved bush walks, theatre, her church community, friends and family.  She would often recount stories of her bushwalking trips, near and far, and the flowers she had seen along the way.

Her home and garden were her pride and joy. She was passionate about native bush flora taking great pride in her own garden where, over the year, she planted her own garden of Eden.  Her love of flowers led her to create wonderful arrangements for the church over many years.

When I think of mum, I think of an incredibly strong, intelligent and inquisitive woman.  She was kind and always welcoming to every person who came into her home.  She adored her grandchildren - Zvi, Zane, Jamila and Teddy.  She showered them with love, chocolate and home made shortbread at every opportunity.  We will cherish all the memories we have of our family celebrations over the years.

Mum, it is with a heavy heart that we lay you down to rest today.  May you Rest In Peace.

Thank you for everything you have done for us.  We will miss you today and every day and you will forever are in our hearts

Use your voice and live by your actions. It is not an easy path, but it is the right one.
